Deni 5500 Scoop Factory Soft Serve Ice Cream Maker Review

Deni 5500 Scoop Factory Soft Serve Ice Cream MakerWell, I found this at a thrift store for about $9 so I don't have any hard feelings about it not working that well.I also made some really great ice cream with it though not quite as easily as it advertises.I found that after following all the directions I had to pour out the ice cream soup into another container and refreeze it.Then, after it hardened up enough it was great, albeit not soft serve.Sadly the freezer container fell out of the freezer and craked and all the chemical inside melted out while I mixed the last batch. At the prices they want for a new one I wouldn't recommend it at all.But I wouldn't hesitate to buy another for $9!

Waring Pro YM350 Professional Yogurt Maker Review

Waring Pro YM350 Professional Yogurt MakerI picked this up at a B&M store because I couldn't find the Cuisipro yogurt maker locally, and I didn't want to wait for shipping.

Overall, it's a great yogurt maker.Very easy to use, and it makes delicious yogurt.I really like that it comes with two different sizes of jars, so you can choose to make either individual servings or two larger amounts. Also, mine turns itself off when the cycle is done, although I can't find mention online or in the instruction book about an auto-off.The black and chrome matches my other kitchen appliances, so I don't have to hide it away with my other few white gadgets that don't match the rest of the kitchen.

The one issue I have with this yogurt maker:The base is large enough to hold 7 of the single-serve jars. The recipes in the book that comes with it makes enough for 7 jars. But it only comes with 6 jars. This is a little frustrating, as you end up wasting some of the milk mixture when you use it.

Replacement jars are available for order if you call Waring's customer service, and I plan on buying an extra set, anyway, so I can make the next batch before the first is used up.But I am really annoyed that they don't even give you enough jars in the first place. So now I will actually have to order 8 to make two sets of 7.

Otherwise....It's a great product.

Chef's Choice 839 Krumkake Express Review

Chef's Choice 839 Krumkake ExpressVery good unit to make krumkakes. The recipes that ship with the unit are easy to make and taste excellent. In the weeks following the purchase of this krumkake maker I must have baked over 100 krumkakes and was never disappointed!

Pros: Looks and feels good. Makes cakes up to 6" in diameter and very thin. The barrocco ornament of the iron looks very pretty on the cake.

Cons: To achieve the unified golden color of the cake must use temperature setting no higher than 3, otherwise they come out with patchy color. Because of this, each cake takes approx. 2 minutes to bake.

I have not tried the VillaWare unit, which claims to bake two 5" krumkakes in 30 seconds, but if that's the case than it could be a better choice for someone who needs to accomodate a large party of people fast.

Update 10/17/2008: Friend of mine has the VillaWare maker and she is very happy with it, since she can bake two at a time in about 30 sec. But I have tried her cakes and they don't nearly have that texture and firmness that Chef's Choice unit produces. Some of the difference could be attributed to the recipe variations, but the fast-baked VillaWare cakes just don't get that crispy yet firm sensation that I crave. Just my 2c.

Aroma Soft-Serve Ice Cream Maker - AIC-107 Review

Aroma Soft-Serve Ice Cream Maker - AIC-107Decided to give this product a try despite the mixed reviews from various sites. The mixing paddle broke during the first use and the canister gasket did not seal properly which resulted in the liquid ice cream mixture leaking all over the counter and producing a sticky mess that had to be cleaned up.All-in-all this was a very disappointing and frustrating experience. We will be returning this item immediately.

VillaWare V5100 Classic Ice Cream & Gelato Maker, Electric Review

VillaWare V5100 Classic Ice Cream & Gelato Maker, ElectricI've read all the reviews and will give you some real concrete reasons not to buy this.I didn't expect this product to do all of the work for me and I understand the reasoning behind some of the directions, such as cooling the mixture before pouring it into the freezing bowl (the bowl will thaw out if you don't!!!!!!!!)I received this and a Cuisinart ice cream maker as gifts at the same time.I decided to keep the VillaWare since I Knew they made industrial machines.I made three batches in my VillaWare, one ice cream, one non-dairy "ice cream" and one sorbet.I just kept thinking "Is this really how it should look?".I was following all of the directions (which aren't as big of a hassle as some would make them out to be!) and I ended up with mildly frozen slush which I had to put in the freezer to make it even remotely firm enough to eat. So,I broke out the Cuisinart that I was going to return and made the exact same sorbet recipe that I had made the previous day.Good thing I did,The Cuisinart batch was more frozen after 5 minutes than the VillaWare after 20 minutes. It produced a nice sorbet that was still soft but firm enough to eat right out of the freezing bowl. These machines operate under the exact same concept so from what I could tell the problem is this; The Villaware bowl doesn't seem to be quite as cold and the paddle that is supposed to scrape the frozen mixture from the side of the bowl isn't close enough to the bowl to scrape enough off to freeze the whole batch. The paddle on the Cuisinart sits right against the side of the bowl and allows the entire batch to freeze and be scraped off and mixed in.
I'll be returning the VillaWare now
Save yourself some time and hassle and buy a Cuisinart

Back to Basics Chill Smoothie MakersHave used this machine for the first and last time. The unit we got is slow, doesn't "pulse", and the noise level is as uncomfortably loud as standing next to a jackhammer.I've never felt the need to write a review before but consumers need to be warned:do not buy this machine.

Whether it's breakfast smoothies before work, protein shakes after a workout, or frozen cocktails with friends on a Friday night, this convenient appliance might be best left out on the counter. Simple to use, just add ingredients, secure the lid, then choose from high, medium, low, or pulse settings. The unit's 500-watt/700-watt pulse-power motor and ice-crushing blades mix with ease, while its patented Stir Stick technology forces ingredients into the mixing blades for smooth, even results. In addition, the blender comes with a large 48-ounce glass blending jar, which features a generous easy-grip handle and a mess-free dispensing valve for serving thick, blended drinks right into a glass. Other highlights include a cup indentation in the base, four stabilizing feet, and a compact design. To clean, wipe the motor base down with a damp cloth and wash all parts except for the motor base in warm, soapy water, then rinse and dry thoroughly. A user manual with recipes comes included. The smoothie maker measures approximately 10 by 11 by 14-3/4 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Rival IS150 Ice Shaver / Slushie / Snow Cone Maker (in Blue, Green OR Red) Review

Rival IS150 Ice Shaver / Slushie / Snow Cone MakerI'm leaving my first review below the dotted line just to show why i originally gave it one star. Rival's customer service is very good. When I complained about my snow cone maker's inability to shave any ice, they promptly sent me a new one no questions asked. The new one works great and now I can see why the other reviewers really liked it. The blade on my original one must have been dull or something because this one works like it's supposed to - just like a regular snow cone maker would make it.

---------------------------------------------------------------

(my original review)

I just can't believe the rave reviews I read here. We got one of these from WalMart and it didn't work at all. Not sure what else I could do differently, but it only spit out a paltry amount of shaved ice even after a few minutes straight running. The shaved ice in the cup I was holding next to it was melting before I could even get a tablespoon of shaved ice. Maybe I got a bad blade or something, but if you buy one, save your receipt so you can take it back if you get the same results as I did. I contacted Rival and if they can either tell me what to do or fix it somehow I'll change my tune, but for now I wouldn't even feel good about selling this in a yard sale!

Update: Rival's customer service emailed me and said they were sending a replacement. That could bode well for this review. Will know in 7-10 days.

Rival GC9155 Gel Canister 1-1/2-Quart 2-Piece Electric Ice-Cream Maker Review

Rival GC9155 Gel Canister 1-1/2-Quart 2-Piece Electric Ice-Cream MakerWhen I first got this I followed the directions on the box for chocolate cookie ice cream exactly (which specified refrigerating the mixture for 30 minutes and freezing the gel canisters for 24 hours). This gave me something at about the consistency of a runny milkshake. My second try involved refrigerating the mixture for 18 hours and freezing the gel canisters for around 36 hours. That was more of a thick milkshake.

My winning formula was refrigerating the mix overnight and freezing the canisters for a week in a 0 degree (F) deep freezer. This produced fairly soft ice cream, but still definitely ice cream (it did harden in the freezer afterward).I haven't yet experimented to see what the minimum time for a refreeze is, but bringing them down from room temperature the first time took a very long time.

If you want to make smallish batches of ice cream fairly often, then this is the ice cream maker for you.It doesn't require you to get bagged ice to cool the mixture, and the gel canisters collapse to take up less space in your freezer if you just store them there full time. If, on the other hand, you want large batches or only want to make ice cream for special occasions you're probably better off with a bagged ice and rock salt model.

White Mountain 4-qt. Electric Ice Cream Maker Review

White Mountain 4-qt. Electric Ice Cream MakerReviewer: sparksfly - See all my reviews
I have owned a hand-cranked White Mountain 4-quart freezer for twenty-three years. All freezer parts have held up extremely well. White Mountain has a reputation for quality that has withstood the test of decades.

The day before you plan to use the freezer, fill the wooden bucket with water and let it stand overnight. This causes the wood to swell, so the process is neater the next day. Empty the bucket before you set things up to churn.

If you set the churn up on a sturdy plastic stepstool, churning will be easier ergonomically. Use the recommended ice-to-salt ratio and be sure to keep the bucket topped up. As you churn, make sure the drain hole in the bucket doesn't get blocked and the brine flows out freely, or you will have salty ice-cream. It is a good idea to put the whole contraption in a shallow plastic basin to catch the brine, because the brine that drains out will murder grass, corrode metal, and stain some wooden surfaces. Churn slowly until the crank will not budge. The best way to do this is to have a small person sit on a folded towel on top of the churn while folks take turns cranking. After the ice cream is firm, remove the dasher, replace the lid, and put a cork in the hole in the lid. (You may have to buy your own cork.) Drain off as much brine as you can without letting brine slip in through the edge of the lid. Add more of the ice-and-salt mixture, mounding it over the top of the bucket. Cover with the towel and let the ice cream "ripen" for a little while in a cool place.

After serving, put any leftovers in a plastic box in the freezer. If you want to reclaim some of the salt for future use, you can turn the slurry in the bucket out slowly onto several sheets of newspaper, letting the water run off. Let the salt dry thoroughly in the sun. It is important to wash all parts of the churn thoroughly within a few hours of using them, since the salt slurry is highly corrosive.

Kids love the whole process - I frequently tease them into sharing the cranking duties by telling them they may not have any ice cream unless they help.

My favorite flavor is peanut butter! Closely followed by mint-chocolate-chip, Butterfinger, peppermint, peach, strawberry, Heath Bar crunch....

Product Description:
Many summers ago, ice-cream socials centered around families getting together, each cranking out its favorite ice cream for all to enjoy. You can still carry on that tradition (without all the cranking) with this authentic-looking Electric Ice Cream Maker. The White Mountain Freezer company, which crafts these Makers, has been in business for over 145 years and knows all about making ice cream the good old-fashioned way. In fact, they've developed an exclusive method of mixing the ice cream ??? a triple-motion gear action that properly mixes and beats the entire cream contents of the canister, resulting in the smoothest, creamiest ice cream in just 20-30 minutes. Each Maker is equipped with a commercial-grade motor which allows you to stop the freezing process midway as you add fruit, berries or nuts, and restart right afterwards. The aluminum canister is designed for faster freezing, and the cast-iron dasher and blades will never warp out of shape. The freezer tub is made of New England pine that has been sealed, stained, lacquered and bound with strong galvanized hoops.

Cuisipro Donvier Yogurt Maker Jars, Set of 8 Review

Cuisipro Donvier Yogurt Maker Jars, Set of 8Have both these and glass yogurt containers. Give me the glass hands down any time any where. The lids that screw on and off with the glass ones just seem to function better and easier. These may take up a tad less room in your fridge as they are narrower and taller over all but glass seems cleaner and I can't say enough good things about the glass jars. Also I will reach for the kerr or ball 4 ounce regular lid jars when I need an extra yogurt jar or two over these once again. I find the plastic lids on the acrylic jars hard to remove without disturbing the yogurt. Yes I like my yogurt with a firm non stirred up texture. Otherwise it goes into smoothy style drinks and it doesn't matter. Each to their own but glass is my cup of yogurt and choice...these plastic ones now sit down in the dark basement shelf...waiting quietly at least. PS you can get plastic screw on caps for all regular canning jars and also most mayo plastic lids fit them as well. But by all means MAKE YOGURT no matter what your preferences of tools be.

Dippin' Dots Frozen Dot Maker + Bonus Set Review

Dippin' Dots Frozen Dot Maker + Bonus SetThis is nothing but a mold that makes your 'frozen treats' into tiny balls. The mix that comes with it is really bad. It's nothing even close to the real Dippin' Dots. You can buy popsicle makers at Walmart for $2 that do the same thing, just a different shape. I had to have this when it came out because of all the money I was spending at the mall. I do not recommend this piece of junk unless it sells for $4.99 or less.

Sportsman Ice Cream Maker Review

Sportsman Ice Cream MakerI started using my new ice cream maker on June 7TH,2009 and two days ago (June 29TH)it started skipping and we had to use the manual crank.
I have called the distributor "Unbeatable sales" 3 times and written an e-mail once. Customer service does not respond or answer their phones.

I think I have figured out now why they only give a 30 day warranty, they know it's a piece of junk. I have lost about $125 buying from this company so I can safely say:
I would never buy again from this company.

Zeroll Ice Cream Spade Review

Zeroll Ice Cream SpadeOur 'iron test' for any ice cream gadget is a very well-known brand of nonfat frozen yogurt. For some reason in the freezer it gets hard enough to make a patio out of, but the Zeroll spade goes right through it.Not sure the liquid in the handle really helps, probably more the excellent design -- i.e., handle size, leverage, heft, etc.At any rate, the liquid seems to keep the handle from getting icy-cold while scooping, which is nice for arthritic hands. PLEASE note that the box says on the back but in much-too-small print : DO NOT PUT IN DISHWASHER. It rinses off perfectly after use in ordinary tapwater so no problem.

Delonghi ICK8500 Ice Cream Maker Review

Delonghi ICK8500 Ice Cream MakerThe problem with most other ice cream units is the need to separately refridgerate the bucket. While more expensive than one of those units, the convenience of having a built in refridgeration unit means you'll use this one more frequently. Having a separate bucket is a definite plus since washing out the permanent bowl after each batch would be a hassle. There is a cover that comes with the machine but it only fits over the bucket while it's in the machine itself.Unlike what I read in an earlier review, my unit has had no problems with the paddle motor. But be warned - you must fit the paddle into the dip in the bucket precisely or you risk being splattered with your ice cream mixture once you turn the motor on.
The machine will make approximately 4 cups of ice cream which doesn't mean you can pour in 4 cups of your mixture to chill. The volume seems to increase by about 50% in the last 5-10 minutes of churning.I've found that 3 cups of your base mixture works best. Your mixture should be refridgerator cold for the best results. If you put it in the freezer to chill, make sure there are no ice granules when you pour the mixture in the ice cream maker. It doesn't chill correctly if it's too icy. Most batches have been ready in under 30 minutes. "Ready" gives you a gelato (soft) consistency. If you like your ice cream store-bought hard, you'll want to transfer it to a separate container to freeze for a few additional hours.
There is a timer included but it doesn't automatically turn the machine off.I use mine to remind me to check the consistency of the mixture after a certain time. The motor isn't quiet but it's not any more obnoxiously loud than any other kitchen appliance.
With experience, you 'll be able to tell, by listening to the motor, when your batch is about ready. The paddle motor will reverse once the mixture is at the correct consistency.Turn it off as soon as it does this. When you use the removable bucket, you have to pour 2T of alcohol into the permanent bucket. When the paddle reverses, it can lift the removable bucket up a bit.I had an entire batch ruined by having alcohol get into the mixture when the bucket shifted up after the paddle reversed.
We've found this unit to be highly satisfactory, easy to use and clean, and downright fun to have in the kitchen. Not only do I recommend it, I bought units for presents over the holidays.

Rival GC9101-W Treat Shoppe 1-Quart Ice Cream / Frozen Yogurt / Sorbet Maker, BlueThis machine was a piece of crap. i took the freeze canister out and followed the detailed discription of how to assemble it. i was about to get ready to make me some good homemade ice cream when I put together the machine and locked i realized that i didnt put the canister in while unlocking (it has this twist-and-lock thing) a piece popped off. i tried to put it back to have found out tht a piece tht is supposed to "spin" the blade was broken and hanging by a thread. i do not know if i did this but i am pretty sure i did not. all in all i do not know how this product works all i know is that they need to make the product a little more sturdy. WILL NOT BUY EVER AGAIN. hope this helps anyone thinking about purchusing this item.
